Why did spectators during the original O.J Simpson trial do such silly things outside the courthouse?

I believe it's because many people fail to take those things seriously and consequently they start seeing those things like it's a fiesta so to speak. Also, I believe it's because it was a celebrity's trial. I recall that at that time (I don't know about nowadays) O.J. Simpson was the MOST FAMOUS person to ever have been charged with murder. So, may that's a contributing factor.
