Why do court cases always say " the people vs _____"?

Why do they always make it sound like the people are backing the prosecutor by saying "the people vs ___". If the people arent backing the DA and the prosecutor why dont they just say the name of the DA or prosecutor versus whoever they think is guilty? I dont get it???
