No need for the comma after society because "of being respected" is not a sentence on its own. The semicolon can also be left out. It might sound better like this: "It is the small gestures of ociation I miss the most. A simple handshake or a civil greeting as I am crossing the street." There should be a comma after however and you should take out the hyphen. "However, the absence that bothers me the most is the loss of my home. A home represents so much more than a house." You could do it that way, or just take out the hyphen.
